About Slovenia

Slovenia borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia with a surface area of just over 20,000 sq km and about two million inhabitants. Since 1 May 2004, it has been a member of the European Union. It has excellent geographical position, in the very heart of Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and where the limestone Karst extends to the Pannonian lowlands. For more info about Slovenia visit http://www.slovenia.si.

The City of Koper

The city of Koper is lying on the Istrian peninsula in the South-West Slovenia on the Adriatic coast, only 20 km South of Trieste, Italy and about 30 km North of Croatian border. Besides Koper, there are other three important towns along the Slovenian coast, Izola, Piran and Portorož.

Pre-departure Arrangements

EEC (European Economic Community) residents
As of 1 May 2004, a citizen of the European Economic Community (i.e. EU member states, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) may enter the Republic of Slovenia with a valid identity card or passport. No visa is required, regardless of the purpose of their stay in the Republic of Slovenia.
Regarding the residence permit, during the first three months of a visitor’s stay in the Republic of Slovenia a residence permit is not necessary. However, for a period longer than 3 months a visitor is obliged to apply for a valid residence permit, which will be issued by the local authorities. To obtain a residence permit, the applicant must:
•    present a valid identity card or passport;
•    provide proof that they are enrolled in a recognised educational establishment (confirmation of enrolment issued by the host university);
•    be covered by health insurance covering all risks in the host member state (European health card or the E111 certificate); and
•    assure the relevant national authority that they have sufficient resources for the duration of their residence. A declaration signed by the applicant is sufficient.

Non-EEC (European Economic Community) residents
Prior to arriving in Slovenia, foreign students who are not citizens of the European Economic Community must obtain:

First Residence Permit

The procedure for obtaining a first residence permit may take up to three months and therefore the process must be started on time.
The applicant must submit an Application for First Residence Permit at the nearest diplomatic or consular representative office of the Republic of Slovenia. The following documents must be submitted with the application:
•    two photocopies of the current passport showing all the pages which have visas and other  seals, or comments;
•    one copy must be verified (the page with personal data and the page where the validity of the passport is shown);
•    an undamaged photo according to the latest ICAO standards, proof of admission to studies,  education, specialisation, professional advancing, or evidence of a governmental competent authority for implementation of a bilateral or international agreement or the donation of a scholarship, or a certificate which is submitted by authorised organisations of the state responsible for implementing the programme;
•    evidence of sufficient funds to cover the period of staying in the Republic of Slovenia (original or a verified copy);
•    evidence of health insurance (original or a verified copy);
•    a certificate that the person has not been convicted of a criminal offence by the homeland state. An original form or a verified photocopy must be submitted;
•    the application must also indicate the exact address of residence in the Republic of Slovenia (place, street, number, and post box).

The applicants may submit their application in person or have a third person submit it on their behalf  with the applicant’s certified authorisation. Upon receiving notification to collect the permit, the applicant will have to bring their passport and come in person to the diplomatic or consular representative office where they submitted the application.

Within three days of arriving in the Republic of Slovenia, a student is required to report the place of  their temporary residence at the local Administration Unit or at a police station.

Health Care

Citizens of European Union member states can come to Slovenia with a European health insurance card. This card can also be obtained by citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.The card ensures the same access to public health services, i.e. to doctors and pharmacies, as Slovenian citizens. If you do have to pay for health services in Slovenia, you will be reimbursed immediately when you return home. The European health insurance card covers all necessary medical care to allow you to continue your stay in Slovenia. The card does not cover the medical services of private providers.

For citizens of other countries, before arriving in Slovenia it is best to take out international travel insurance, including health insurance.General travel insurance is also recommended for citizens of the abovementioned countries.

Further information shall be obtained from the health authorities in home country.
