In June, the Center for Knowledge Development and Transfer of the University of Primorska announced its second call for the competition »Innovation of the University of Primorska 2020«, which aims at encouraging innovation among researchers, professors and other UP employees with a special focus on strengthening links with the private sector through innovative business ideas.
Based on the expert opinion of the patent attorney, the evaluation commission dedicated the first place to the innovation named: »Device for measuring static muscle tension of knee flexors / extensors in supine patients«, submitted by Prof. Nejc Šarabon.
The invention solves the technical problem of measuring the torques in the knee joint, which under static conditions occur during conscious as well as artificially excited muscle movements - whereby the measurement is performed on a lying patient. The innovation consists of a measuring device that combines a mechanical construction, electronic components and computer software.
The key users of this innovative device will be hospitals with long-term bedridden patients in intensive care, in an infectious disease clinic or in internal medicine wards, as well as cardio-respiratory patients. It is also worth highlighting the topicality of the innovation in the light of its relevance to patients hospitalized due to COVID-19. In addition to doctors and other medical staff, potential end users are researchers and experts who study aging in the older adult population.
