History and heritage
The university has been active in the field of historical studies in the decade since its formal beginning established it as a Slovenian and European reference point for researching the history of the border region of western Slovenia, as well as a major player in promoting views on Slovenian history from its various geographic areas. Through examining the littoral area as a place of contact of cultures, mentalities, and nations it offers an important contribution to the awareness and knowledge of the historical images of the Slovenian Mediterranean. The research includes studies of economic, anthropological, sociological, ethnological, political, diplomatic, military, military-intelligence and cultural history. In the field of heritage, research focuses on the heritage of the Mediterranean, specifically addressing Slovenian territory, the wider area of the Mediterranean and the Balkans in different periods of history and their integration into the historical dynamics of economic and cultural events. Researchers are interested in the processes that have historically influenced the development of cultural landscapes and formed the appearance of the area as it is today.
Research findings combine archaeology, anthropology, ethnology, history, art history, architecture, and culture, as well as specific disciplines, such as museology, conservation, archival management and tourism. Researchers operate within national and international projects dedicated to different aspects of heritage, as well as performing numerous market research projects and preventive excavation projects for archaeological sites and archives for different clients.
