Research in geography relates to the field of general and regional geography, with an emphasis on the geographical space of contact between the Alpine, Dinaric and Mediterranean worlds of Western Slovenia. Research by the parent members of the UP Department of Geography, Faculty of Humanities, focuses on the study of the characteristics of surface and groundwater karst waters, their vulnerability, and importance, including in the light of global environmental (climate) changes. An important area of research is a study of the geographical aspects of sustainable development and environmental geography in general, with individual smaller projects linked to the actual narrower or wider space in which the university operates. Individual studies include the study of flysch erosion processes and geographic evaluation of the potential for rural and coastal development. In the field of social geography, research is mostly related to the study of tourism geography, migration processes, and economic geography. In the area of geography methodology, research relates to geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (use of lidar and sonar data in geography) and 3D modelling.
