The European Summit on Education and Innovation was held in Brussels on Thursday, June 23 2022. The event brought together European higher education institutions, European universities, politicians at various levels, innovators, business representatives and others.
In her opening address, the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabiel, highlighted the importance of attracting talented young people and recognized universities as central institutions driving innovation. At the same time, in her address to the public, she presented a new initiative - the European Network of Innovative Higher Education Institutions. The network brings together 35 institutions - 27 universities from the EU Member States and 8 European universities delegated by the European Commission. These are representatives of the most innovative and propulsive institutions selected from 5,000 European higher education institutions. The University of Primorska is also part of the network, which was nominated as a Slovenian proposal and accepted into the network as one of the aforementioned 35 institutions.
By December 1st, the network must present recommendations to the European Commissioner for the development of the European Higher Education Area and innovation. Thus, with the establishment of the network, additional talks began immediately, to operationalize the European Strategy for Universities and the new European Innovation Program, which will be published on July 5th 2022. The network will also propose other measures to develop and promote the competitiveness of the European Higher Education Area and its prominent role in innovation and integration with the environment and sustainable development.
