- The cannon for a year at the Pivka Military History Park
For many years a small cannon stood in front of the Aquarium Piran, to the right of the entrance. However, the Park of Military History is currently preparing an exhibition on the events in the North Adriatic during the Second World War, so the University of Primorska was approached with a proposal and agreed to lend the cannon for a year for the purposes of the exhibition.
The cannon is a German Flak 20 mmm anti-aircraft gun, which was the armament of the German minesweeper R 15. The minesweeper was sunk in April 1945 off the western coast of Istria between Savudrija and Umag, and in the mid-1980s it was towed to Piran by fishermen. The park will carry out extensive conservation work to preserve the cannon, which represents an important part of regional heritage and was a witness to the colourful wartime events in the Adriatic Sea, and to exhibit it in an appropriate museum setting.
